The Church of Scientology Los Angeles hosted a disaster preparedness open house and expo February 28 where volunteers learned the basics of how to respond in times of emergency, and organizations from throughout Los Angeles had the opportunity to network with one another, learn the services each has to offer, and increase their ability to respond to the needs of the community.

The Florida Blood Services One Blood and the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology of Tampa held a blood donor drive at 300 South Garden Ave in downtown Clearwater. The drive was open to any who qualify to donate blood. "Spring and Spring Break are right around the corner, a time for many to hit the roads for holiday fun," said Church of Scientology spokesperson Pat Harney.

The Brussels Branch of the Churches of Scientology for Europe honored World Civil Defense Day with an open house and exhibit on the Church’s Volunteer Ministers program. Nearly five years have past since the 2010 monsoon submerged some 20 percent of Pakistan in the worst flooding in that country’s history.

“As any New Yorker would tell you, to see the twin towers erupt and then disintegrate was a living nightmare,” says LPN, EMT and Scientology Volunteer Minister Ayal Lindeman, one of the more than 800 Scientologists who served at Ground Zero.

Call for Action on Balkans Floods

A team of Volunteer Ministers on a Goodwill Tour in Belgrade immediately deployed to the zone and started helping on the floods relief efforts together with local authorities and other emergency groups.

Volunteer Ministers have been activated in the Balkans region after a State of Emergency was declared in Bosnia and Serbia due to the worst flooding in 120 years. Overflowing rivers burst into towns and villages, cutting off whole communities, while landslides buried houses. Thousands of people are being  evacuated.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response Gears up for New Tornado Season

Scientology Volunteer Ministers helped with the cleanup after the May 2013 tornado devastated Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Tornado season fast approaching (there were 39 U.S. tornadoes in February 2013) and Scientology Volunteer Ministers teams from across the country are poised to respond.

The most erratic of natural disasters, the tornado strikes with a fury unparalleled by any other force of nature.  So it was from May 19 to 31, when a series of tornados devastated Oklahoma and other Midwestern states.

Featured in a new brochure published in January 2014, Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tours reach out to individuals and civic, community and religious leaders in remote communities with practical solutions to help improve conditions in life.

According to the Annual Global Climate and Catastrophe Report, there were 296 separate natural disaster events in 2013 causing economic losses of $192 billion. In one recent year, major disasters affected the lives of some 208 million people internationally. Disaster relief organizations are hard pressed to provide even a fraction of the needed relief and care. The international Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response Team works to fill this gap.

Filling the Gap in Times of Disaster, Large and Small

Hundreds of Volunteer Ministers traveled to South Asia to respond to the 2004 tsunami. Often among the first to respond to disasters, Volunteer Ministers assist emergency workers with whatever task is needed and provide “spiritual first aid” to victims and first responders alike.
